Juan likes being a care professional because he loves helping people. He says it’s a beautiful thing to help someone and it makes you feel good.
Juan’s favorite part about working in elder care is hearing his client tell lots of stories. Juan’s client, Mr. Doug, has lived a fascinating life. He was a pilot and learned to play the banjo as a teenager.
Juan said when he first started working with a Dementia care client he observed his client cried a lot, but the more they got to know each other the less and less it happened. Juan said Mr. Doug told him he feels better when Juan is around. Juan said he tells his client everything is going to be okay, don’t worry and just those few words change his client’s whole attitude.
Juan’s advice to other care professionals is to care and be patient. Not every day is going to go just right but don’t be discouraged.
Before Juan came to work at Home Instead, he suffered a massive heart attack followed by triple bypass surgery. If it wasn’t for his wife and daughter performing lifesaving CPR he wouldn’t be here. He said he feels appreciative for every day he has with his wife, daughter, and friends.
