Over the years, it has been a joy for Nancy Julin to gain new family members. They are her Home Instead® clients. As relationships have developed, the twice-honor Care Professional of the Month has shared laughter and tears, and every other emotion.
“The client who sticks out in my mind the most is one who treated me like one of her children. We got along. We’d laugh a lot. With her sharp wit, she picked on her husband, and then she’d pick on me. I loved making her life easier,” said Nancy, who was honored as Care Pro of the Month in June at Home Instead of Victoria. Her first award came in May 2021.
On Jan. 28, 2021, Nancy joined the award-winning Home Instead franchise owned by Pietro Jordao and Dillon Rice. Nancy’s employment with Home Instead came at a difficult time in her life. “After my husband passed away, I became a Home Instead Care Pro. I needed to be home more for my children, so I needed an employer who afforded me scheduling flexibility,” she recalled. “I had seen a Home Instead ad in which they were seeking Care Professionals. I was looking for a full-time job. I began my career as a CNA then I became a correctional medication aide. I have taken training for an EMT.”
Nancy’s most difficult caregiving responsibility was helping her late husband. “He suffered from heart issues, diabetes and high blood pressure. I was serving as his family caregiver and also was trying to work full time and take care of my three teenage sons,” Nancy explained. Her husband was in and out of hospitals. Sadly, he passed away in 2018.
There was no question Nancy knew how to take care of her husband. After working as a CNA for two years, Nancy became a correctional medication aide in the prison system for seven years. “I had been a caregiver in home health for a while before joining Home Instead,” she noted. In her first role as a family caregiver, Nancy assisted her grandmother. Then she helped with her grandfather who had Alzheimer’s. “Helping my grandma started me off into the medical field,” recalled Nancy, who began her professional career at a nursing home.
Just as she did for her late husband, grandparents and many others, Nancy provides companionship, safety assurance, meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping, and transportation and errands for Home Instead clients. Nancy offers personal assistance with eating, grooming, dressing, bathing, incontinence care, dementia support, cognitive impairment, hospice support and mobility assistance. Home Instead Care Pros not only assist their clients, but help their families eliminate worry, reduce stress and re-establish personal freedom.
Touching lives impacts Nancy’s soul, whether she’s providing physical help or offering emotional support in a companionship role. The bottom line is, Nancy said, “I like helping people to make their lives easier.”
